Forty-nine percent of Americans say the Trump administration should take some sort of action to punish North Korea following the death of 22-year-old Otto Warmbier last week.

Warmbier, a college student from Ohio who was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor in North Korea after he tried to steal a propaganda banner, was released to the U.S. in a coma two weeks ago and died the following week.

The USA Today/Suffolk University Poll released Wednesday found that 35 percent of Americans disagreed with the notion that the U.S. should punish North Korea while 16 percent said they were undecided.

The national survey of 1,000 registered voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Two senators are preparing legislation that would ban travel to Pyongyang because of Warmbier’s death and say that it would deprive the repressive regime of much-needed revenue.

"Sadly, because of Otto Warmbier, it's been expedited. The American people need to know this. The American people need to know this, because it sounds exotic to go to a Hermit Kingdom, but it's not exotic," Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., said in an interview, according to CNN.

"It's dangerous, and you're dealing with a maniacal society," Wilson added.
