Democrats have an edge over Republicans when it comes to American voters' preference for which party should control Congress, a new poll shows.
The NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey released Friday finds 47 percent of registered voters prefer a Democratic-controlled Congress, while 43 percent prefer a GOP-controlled one.
In June, the parties were tied on the question, 46 percent to 46 percent, though Democrats also had a four-point edge in May, according to NBC News.
The survey's margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
Republicans now hold majorities in both chambers, but face tough Senate battles in states that have voted for Democrats in recent presidential elections.
Democrats will need to flip four seats to win control of the Senate if Hillary Clinton wins the presidency, and five seats if Donald Trump wins.
In the House, Republicans hold a 59-seat majority, the largest cushion either party has enjoyed since 1928,
United Press International reports.
