Among other burning social issues like immigration, refugee crisis, legalizing marijuana, gun-control initiative is a hot topic for the November ballot.
According to a new USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll conducted by SurveyMonkey, two-thirds of California voters support a gun-control initiative. Nearly the same percentage — 66 percent — of people said they don't have a firearm in their home, the survey showed.
The results:
- 64 percent support gun control initiative;
- 28 percent don't support gun control initiative;
- 8 percent gave no answer.
The issue gained steam after a series of shootings in San Bernardino and Orlando among other places. Earlier in July, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a sweeping package of gun control bills, banning high-capacity ammunition magazines and expanding the definition of prohibited assault weapons.
Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom's Proposition 63 emphasizes on the requirement for background checks for those who buy ammunition. It also prohibits possession of large-capacity ammo magazines and arms.
Approval for Proposition 63:
- 70 percent among 18 to 24-year-olds;
- 56 percent among 45 to 54-year-olds.
Seventy-two percent of Hispanic voters support Proposition 63, which comprise 70 percent of women and 56 percent of men.
The initiative has also divided voters along party lines. While 85 percent of Democrats support it, 51 percent of Republicans said they would vote against it.
Around 1,879 registered voters participated in the survey which was conducted from September 1 to 8.
