Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and former Vice President Joe Biden are currently the leading contenders in the Democratic presidential field in a new poll from NBC News and The Wall Street Journal, while former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg missed out on the top three despite a strong showing in recent polls.
Sanders and Biden were statistically tied in the poll, as only a single-point separated them with a margin of error of +/- 4.74 percentage points. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., came third, and was the only other candidate to show double digits. Bloomberg came fourth, and former South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg came fifth.
- Sanders: 27%.
- Biden: 26%.
- Warren: 15%.
- Bloomberg: 9%.
- Buttigieg: 7%.
No other candidate managed to register more than 5% support. Bloomberg previously came in third place in a recent nationwide survey from The Hill and HarrisX, with 11% support, and had a stronger fourth-place showing in a Morning Consult poll released Tuesday, where he registered 12% support.
“Four years ago, Republicans thought it was unfathomable at this stage that Donald Trump could be the party’s nominee,” said Democratic pollster Peter Hart, one of two in charge of the survey, along with Republican pollster Bill McInturff. “The Democrats should not make that mistake. Bernie Sanders is formidable and that’s what we’ve learned in this survey.”
NBC and the Journal polled 428 Democratic primary voters from Jan. 26-29, and has a margin of error of +/- 4.74 percentage points.
