Texas Governor Rick Perry called for a U.S. ban on travelers from countries hit hardest by the deadly Ebola virus, with an exception for aid workers.

“Air travel is in fact how this disease crosses borders,” Perry, a possible candidate for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, said today in a news conference in Austin.

Perry said he talked to President Barack Obama yesterday and also asked him to consider placing people exposed to Ebola on a no-fly list, which the airlines would follow. Perry called it “indefensible” that a nurse exposed to Ebola was allowed to fly after reporting a low-grade fever.

The governor’s task force on the virus has recommended that certain hospitals in the state be designated as Ebola centers, that all receive training on the virus and that there should be more facilities for diagnosing it, he said.

A Liberian man visiting Dallas died of Ebola last week, and two nurses who treated him became the first people infected with the virus in the U.S.

More than 4,500 people have died from Ebola since December, mostly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to the World Health Organization.

Obama said he opposes a travel ban because it may lead to a worse outcome.
