"Top Gun: Maverick," the highly anticipated sequel to the 1986 hit portraying young naval aviators training at the U.S. Navy's Fighter Weapons School, will hit theaters in 2020, and the U.S. military is playing a heavy part in making it pop.

"The Navy did review the script so that: A. it was accurate; and B. was consistent with the ideals of the Navy," said Cmdr. Ron Flanders, a spokesman for Naval Air Forces in San Diego, according to Stars & Stripes.

The aviation school is based at the Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

The Pentagon gave Paramount Pictures Corp. extensive access to its facilities and personnel during the filming.

Paramount was also given permission to fly aircraft, place cameras on and in F/A-18 Super Hornet and Navy helicopters in California, Nevada, and Washington State, and cast members were also trained in water survival and aircraft seat ejection.

The military also assigned a senior staff office in order to "review with public affairs the script's thematics and weave in key talking points relevant to the aviation community."

In return, the Department of Defense is to be given an official screening of the movie before its official release in June, 2020. And, according to the Washington Business Journal, all footage is subject to on an-set security review by a naval aviator or a security manager for security purposes.
