Newly elected Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., said she will not support Rep. Nancy Pelosi's bid to become House Speaker, The Hill is reporting.
“I have said it many, many times: I never want to be disrespectful to anyone who has served — especially a woman who has broken glass ceilings, she said Thursday. “But you’ve got to do what your district is calling for, and in this case, for me, both sides of the aisle, just people feel that we need a new generation of leadership. And I need to hear that.”
“I will not be supporting Leader Pelosi. I will not.”
The Hill reported Slotkin’s comments came as Pelosi is fighting to overcome the toughest threat to her reign atop Democratic leadership in the House.
But Pelosi, D-Calif., has maintained she has the Democratic votes and “overwhelming support” to return to the House Speaker’s post.
“I intend to win the speakership with Democratic votes,” she told reporters on Thursday.
The full House will vote on its next speaker on Jan. 3.
