The world is more complicated now than during the Cold War era and President Barack Obama leadership has been "very strong," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says.
Appearing Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union," Pelosi said that Obama was "in the lead" supporting the Iron Dome Israeli defense system which has been shooting down the majority of Hamas rockets being fired at their cities. He also has been asking for more assistance for Israel and for humanitarian aide for the Palestinians, she said.
In Ukraine, Obama called for sanctions against Russia early on, and he issued tougher sanctions one day before Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down by what the United States believes to have been Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Host Candy Crowley asked Pelosi about the notion that Russian President Vladimir Putin "sized up" Obama as a "softy" after he backed down on his red line in Syria and has played "footsie" with Iran over nuclear negotiations.
"Putin is going to do what Putin is going to do," Pelosi replied, saying that much of what Putin does is based on his own insecurity about Russia's future and not on any weakness he perceives in the American president.
"He's a KGB guy who happens to be the president of Russia," Pelosi said.
