The Mexican government let migrants cross its southern border, and they must step in to take care of them while they are in the country and trying to cross into the United States, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Friday.

"Obviously I think Mexico made a huge mistake letting these people cross their southern border," Paxton told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "They will have to deal with that in the future."

Tijuana has been filled with thousands of migrants waiting to cross the border, and Mayor Jan Manuel Gastelum said earlier this week the city has enough resources to assist the crowds only for a few more days, reports Fox News.

"He has a problem and expend resources he doesn't have," said Paxton. "These people are stuck in a really bad situation and there is no time limit on it…I believe it's up to the Mexican government to step up and take care of these people."

Paxton said he hopes Democrats will work with President Donald Trump over funding the border wall.

"I've been hoping that finally after this election we can come together and start negotiating some kind of compromise that the Democrats can be happy with and the Republicans be happy with," said Paxton."This is is an important issue in a border state and to the entire country."

But if the United States allows the migrants to enter, that will create incentive for "that to happen over and over again" said Paxton "That is not the process that our country is set up. So I do feel sorry for these people and I feel sorry for them because of the organizers and I feel bad that Mexico allowed this to happen."
