Paul Ryan: Obama Can't Keep No-Boots-on-Ground Pledge

By    |   Tuesday, 30 September 2014 08:37 PM EDT

Rep. Paul Ryan doesn't think President Barack Obama will be able to keep his pledge that U.S. ground forces will not be used to fight the Islamic State (ISIS.)

Though Ryan says he is supportive of Obama's actions against the terrorist group that controls territory in Syria and Iraq, he said Obama must now make sure he sees the mission through.

"Define the mission, give it to the military and then let them do their jobs. And don't arm-chair-general these guys," Ryan said Tuesday on CNN's "Erin Burnett Out Front."

"What I fear is that the president is micromanaging the military in such an incremental way, making the same mistakes we've made in the past," Ryan said.

The Wisconsin Republican said that he would help the president pass a resolution for use of force, but that he thinks any ground troops would be limited to Special Forces being embedded with local troops.

"This is not a 100,000-boots-on-the-ground campaign," he said.
