Paris Jackson, the daughter of deceased pop icon Michael Jackson, on Sunday at MTV’s Video Music Awards used her platform to send a message to the “Nazi White Supremacist jerks” who rallied in Charlottesville, Virginia that the U.S. has “zero tolerance for their violence, their hatred and their discrimination.”
“If we all put our voices together, do you realize the difference we would make? If we were to all stand up, united, as one, our impact, it would be, huge,” said Jackson before announcing the nominees for the best pop video. “Believe me. Yuge. And that's not fake news.”
Her fake news comment was a nod to President Donald Trump, who consistently calls out the news media for putting out “fake news” and for being mean, dishonest, bad and America-hating.
Singer Katy Perry kicked off the show by landing on stage in a Moon suit and tried to address current events by joking about how “screwed up” the world has been. After holding up a fake newspaper with a huge headline that read, “The World is on Fire,” she asked the crowd, “How ... are you coping right now?” She answered the question by holding up a fidget spinner.
Rapper Cardi B gave a shout out to free-agent NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who played for the San Francisco 49ers through last season but remains unsigned after kneeling during the national anthem last season to protest police brutality against blacks.
"As long as you kneeling with us, we're going to be standing for you, baby," she said.
