Firebomb Destroys Paris Paper Over Muhammad Insult

Wednesday, 02 November 2011 12:12 PM EDT

A firebomb destroyed the Paris offices of a satirical newspaper a day after the publication named the Prophet Muhammad as its editor in chief for the week, reports the Telegraph.

"You keep abusing Islam's almighty Prophet with disgusting and disgraceful cartoons using excuses of freedom of speech,” read a message on the hacked website of the Charlie Hebdo alternative newsweekly. "Be God's curse upon you!"

The paper, founded in 1960, sarcastically renamed the week’s issue “Sharia Hebdo” to criticize the victory of an Islamist political party in Tunisia.

"We no longer have a newspaper. All our equipment has been destroyed or has melted,” said the editor-in-chief, known only as Charb. “We cannot, today, put together a paper. But we will do everything possible to do one next week. Whatever happens, we’ll do it. There is no question of giving in.”

The paper also drew fury from Muslims in 2007 after it published the infamous Danish cartoons of Muhammad that spurred worldwide outrage.

The Islamist party Ennahda won the majority of seats in elections last month.
