President Donald Trump on Friday said that he may wait to pardon the accused war criminals he was reportedly considering until after their trials have concluded.
The New York Times reported last week that Trump is thinking of pardoning multiple American military members who have been accused or convicted of war crimes, including murder, attempted murder and the desecration of a corpse.
"We are looking at a lot of different pardons for a lot of different people. Some of these soldiers are people that have fought hard, long. You know, we teach them how to be great fighters, and then when they fight, sometimes they get really treated very unfairly. So we’re going to take a look at it," Trump said in remarks to reporters, according to the Washington Examiner.
"I haven’t done anything yet. I haven’t made any decisions. There’s two or three of them right now. It’s a little bit controversial. It’s very possible that I’ll let the trials go on and I’ll make my decision after the trial," he added.
Earlier this month, Trump pardoned Army 1st Lt. Michael Behenna, who had been convicted of murdering Ali Mansur Mohamed, an Iraqi prisoner, in 2009.
