Confidants Say Obama Motivated to Stop Trump

By    |   Wednesday, 10 January 2024 01:01 PM EST

Former President Barack Obama believes there would be "incalculable damage" to the U.S. if former President Donald Trump wins November's election, according to a former Obama administration member.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder told USA Today that there would be "incalculable damage" done if Trump returns to the White House.

Asked whether Obama shared that view, Holder replied: "Absolutely. I don't think it's a question about that.

"I think that's what motivates him. I think that's what will continue to motivate him," Holder told USA Today.

Obama and President Joe Biden chat regularly, and the former Democrat president thinks the election "will be a very close race," one Obama confidant said, USA Today reported Wednesday.

"This is certainly the campaign that President Biden is going to have to ultimately make decisions about," Holder told the outlet.

"President Obama is going to do everything he can to help in that regard, and that means campaigning, but it also means sharing strategic advice with [Biden]. And who better than President Obama to be a primary adviser to the campaign?"

Stories of concern within the Obama camp have surfaced in recent days.

The Washington Post reported Saturday that Obama and Biden had met for a private lunch at the White House in recent months and discussed the campaign.

Obama reportedly has questioned the structure of Biden's reelection campaign.

Earlier this week on the Jay Shetty Podcast, former first lady Michelle Obama said she is "terrified" about the 2024 election's outcome.

Current polls show that Biden and Trump, the current clear front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, are headed to a rematch of the 2020 election.

USA Today/Suffolk University poll results last week showed Trump holding a 39%-37% lead over Biden, with 17% supporting an unnamed third-party candidate.

David Axelrod, a senior adviser to then-president Obama, last month said that a Wall Street Journal poll showing Biden's approval ratings hitting a new low marked a "very, very dark" point for his reelection campaign.

One person who has worked with Obama said the former president is aware of how consequential this election will be and how much he is needed to help.

"I think he's playing a lot of roles simultaneously," said Eric Lesser, a former Massachusetts legislator who worked on the 2008 campaign.

"He's sincere about wanting to support school committee members and city councilors, up to presidents. So there's almost like a mentor-in-chief role that he's taken on."
