CBS Poll: Most Americans Support Obama on Cuba

A majority of Americans support the United States and Cuba restoring diplomatic ties and how President Barack Obama handles relations with the nation, but most want the prison at Guantanamo Bay to remain open, a new CBS News/New York Times poll reveals.

By the numbers:
  • 52 percent approve of  Obama's handling relations;
  • 58 percent approve restoring diplomacy;
  • 52 percent want to keep Guantanamo Bay open;
  • 55 percent favor ending trade embargo with Cuba;
  • 40 percent think restoring relations will lead to more democracy while 50 percent say it will make no difference;
  • 62 percent say reestablishing relations will be good for the U.S.;
  • 51 percent have a favorable impression of Cuba, with Democrats at 56 percent and Republicans at 36 percent.
  • 43 percent are very interested in visiting Cuba and 57 percent have no interest.
The telephone poll was conducted between March 11-15 of a random sample of 1,022 adults nationally.
