Nikolas Cruz, accused of murdering 17 people at a South Florida high school, is getting flooded with fan mail and love letters as he sits in jail, the Sun Sentinel reports.
In addition, hundreds of dollars in contributions are being put in his commissary account by fans of Cruz, who is believed to be responsible for the mass murders at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
"The letters shake me up because they are written by regular, everyday teenage girls from across the nation," said Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein, whose office is representing Cruz.
"That scares me. It's perverted."
The newspaper obtained copies of some of the letters.
One letter from a teenager in Texas arrived in an envelope covered with happy faces and hand-drawn hearts, according to the newspaper.
"I'm a senior in high school," the letter read. "When I saw your picture on the television, something attracted me to you. Your eyes are beautiful and the freckles on you face make you so handsome."
A Chicago woman sent him nine suggestive photos, including one of her in a skimpy bikini.
Even men have reached out to Cruz, the Sentinel reported. A New York man sent photos of himself in his 1992 convertible.
And a woman from New York wrote: "I know you could use a good friend right now. Hang in there and keep your head up."
The newspaper noted Cruz has not seen the letters because he remains isolated on suicide watch.
The Washington Post reported "serial-killer groupies" have exhibited similar attractions toward others accused of murder or convicted of the crime, including Charles Manson and Ted Bundy.
