President Donald Trump's administration likely will have a "two-front behavior" when it comes to dealing with a Democrat-controlled House, but the president made the right decision when he congratulated House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and said he'd back her campaign for House Speaker, former Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday.
"I think the right thing to do is to congratulate her," Gingrich told Fox News's "Fox and Friends." "They won."
Further, it's right that Trump offered to work on items such as infrastructure reform and investment, said Gingrich.
"I think it's possible you will have a two-front behavior where the president on the one hand has an olive branch saying here are things we can work on together, and on the other hand involved in hand-to-hand combat," said Gingrich.
He added that when he was in office, President Bill Clinton was in the White House, and eventually the relationship "degenerated" toward impeachment and investigations.
Gingrich said he and Clinton realized they represented the whole country, not their parties, and there were major achievements including welfare and Medicaid reform, the budget was balanced for four years, and the largest capital gains tax cut in history was achieved.
He said he agrees with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who warned that when Congress ends up in investigations, it hurts.
"The country wants to see things work," said Gingrich. "The country doesn't want to have the House Democrats spend all day every day in investigations and in open warfare against the president."
