Democrats may wind up having to decide if “they really hate the wall more than they love the Dreamers,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday — predicting the party would “sacrifice” the Obama-era program because they are “so ideological.”
In remarks on “Fox News Sunday,” Gingrich praised Trump’s deal-making in working out a compromise with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York and his House counterpart, Nancy Pelosi of California, to extend the debt limit.
The new legislation, however, could set up a fight ultimately over government funding, Trump’s proposed border wall with Mexico and Trump’s decision to end a program that lets young undocumented immigrants stay in the U.S., as well as the debt ceiling.
Gingrich said Senate Majority Mitch McConnell also “took out the provision Schumer wanted most” — a December deadline.
According to the New York Times, Mitchell insists the new legislation preserves the Treasury’s ability to apply “extraordinary measures” and shift money within government accounts to pay off debt and extend federal borrowing power.
Gingrich said the move could extend the deadline to February or March.
“I think the Democrats face the real risk, do they really hate the wall more than they love the Dreamers?” Gingrich said. “Because if I were the president, that's the way I would drive it. These people are so ideological, they would rather sacrifice the Dreamers.”
He also speculated Washington may be at the end of a "hand-off" approach to big tech in light of an admission by Facebook that it sold approximately $100,000 worth of ads to groups linked to Russia.
"I think this is probably four to six years behind the curve,” Gingrich said. “These companies are so big, they control so much of our lives, they can set so many different policies internally with no supervision…”
The government should look “not just the Russian angle, but really … at the underlying nature of these companies, what they do, how they make decisions, these equivalents of a gigantic utility. I don't think you can have power that's hidden away in secret controlled by billionaires,” he said.
