N.J. Lawmaker Seeks Emergency Response to Drones

By    |   Wednesday, 11 December 2024 02:58 PM EST

A New Jersey lawmaker called for a limited state of emergency to be declared due to mysterious drone clusters recently being reported.

Reports of large drones flying near President-elect Donald Trump's Bedminster golf course and military research sites in New Jersey have been on the rise in recent weeks.

State Republican Sen. Jon Bramnick, who represents parts of Morris County, released a statement Tuesday demanding a ban on all drones "until the public receives an explanation regarding these multiple sightings."

Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., told Fox News that Iran is responsible for the drones.

"From very high sources, very qualified sources, very responsible sources, I'm gonna tell you the real deal — Iran launched a mother ship, probably about a month ago, that contains these drones," Van Drew said. "That mothership … is off the east coast of the United States of America."

Drew added that Iran made a deal with China to obtain drones.

"These drones should be shot down whether it was some crazy hobbyist that we can't imagine or whether it is Iran, and I think it very possibly could be, they should be shot down," he said.

Drone sightings have been made in eight New Jersey counties, as well as parts of New York and Pennsylvania.

New Jersey Democrat Gov. Phil Murphy on Wednesday held a briefing call with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, representatives in Congress, and state police to discuss the drone reports, The Guardian reported.

Murphy told reporters Monday that although nothing was seen that would warrant concerns for public safety, authorities were taking the drone sightings "deadly seriously" and that he was participating in discussions with the White House and Homeland Security leaders on Sunday.

Robert Wheeler, an FBI official in charge of investigating the matter, told a House subcommittee on Tuesday that federal investigators have received more than 3,000 reports of drone sightings since beginning an investigation this month into unexplained objects hovering over New Jersey.

The FBI is investigating the series of recent mysterious drone sightings, which have caused the Federal Aviation Administration to prohibit drone flights over the Trump National Golf Club, NJ.com reported.

The FAA, which said it has received reports of drones as far back as Nov. 18, also is preventing unmanned vehicles from flying over Picatinny Arsenal Military Base in Morris County.
