The three broadcast networks devoted five times more coverage to Donald Trump's "Second Amendment" remarks than news about the father of the Orlando shooter attending a Hillary Clinton rally in Florida.
ABC, CBS and NBC devoted a total of 25 minutes and 35 seconds on Trump's comments on Tuesday, versus 4 minutes and 41 seconds about Seddique Mateen, whose son Omar killed 49 people at the Florida nightclub in June and who was at the Clinton rally on Monday, the Media Research Center (MRC) reports.
More specifically, CBS spent 14 minutes and 24 seconds reporting the Republican nominee's remarks on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
That compared with 59 seconds — only on "CBS News This Morning" on Wednesday — reporting the Mateen story, according to the center.
At ABC, the MRC found that 6 minutes and 49 seconds were spent reporting Trump’s remarks, while 3 minutes and 20 seconds went to Mateen, who apparently is running for president of Afghanistan though he lives in the United States.
NBC covered the both topics the least on Tuesday and Wednesday: 4 minutes and 22 seconds on Trump, compared with 32 seconds on Mateen.
The "NBC Nightly News" did not report the Mateen story at all, according to the center, while the "Today" show gave only 32 seconds to the story on Wednesday.
