The USS Mahan on Monday had its second close encounter of the year with an Iranian warship, Fox News reports.
An Iranian Revolutionary Guard "fast attack craft" passed within 1,000 yards of the U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer in the Persian Gulf with its weapons manned, Fox reported.
The Mahan altered its course, sounded a danger signal, fired flares and manned its weapons, officials said, but no warning shots were fired.
The Mahan did fire warning shots during a previous encounter with an Iranian warship near the Strait of Hormuz in January.
Tensions have been higher with Iran in recent months as President Donald Trump has attacked the Obama administration's nuclear agreement that eased sanctions on Iran if it agrees to stop enriching uranium — something Trump and other critics of the deal say Iran cannot be trusted to do.
