National Security Adviser John Bolton said Monday that President Donald Trump told him that Iran will "pay a price" for any further threats against the U.S.
Bolton told reporters that he had spoken with the president "over the last several days," telling him that if Iran does anything at all to the negative, they will pay a price like few countries have ever paid before."
The adviser's comments, made to White House pool reporters in Washington, was tweeted by NBC News' Hallie Jackson.
Trump warned Sunday on Twitter that Iran could face consequences "the like of which few throughout history have suffered before" if it ever again threatened the U.S. in the future.
Trump's late-night post, in mostly capital letters, came hours after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that hostile policies toward Tehran could lead to "the mother of all wars."
