The sinkhole that appeared on the White House grounds a week ago poses no threat to the presidential residence, the National Park Service concluded, the Washington Examiner reported Friday.
The park service determined the cause of the sinkhole was most likely due to "recent heavy rains that eroded the soil," NPS Spokeswoman Jenny Anzelmo-Sarles said in a statement on Friday.
"DC has had more than double average May rainfall. Sinkholes are common following heavy rain," Anzelmo-Sarles tweeted Friday afternoon.
Reports of the sinkhole on the North Lawn of the White House began last weekend and Voice of America reporter Steve Herman posted pictures of it on Twitter as it grew larger, later reporting a second sinkhole had opened up nearby.
