Two leading Democrats ripped the Department of Justice probe into the origins of the Russia investigation, calling it "political revenge" for President Donald Trump.
After it was reported that the DOJ is shifting its focus to a criminal investigation as it tries to ascertain what went on behind the scenes when the investigation of Trump's campaign began in 2016, Reps. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., and Adam Schiff, D-Calif., reacted via a joint statement on Twitter.
"These reports, if true, raise profound new concerns that the Department of Justice under AG Barr has lost its independence and become a vehicle for President Trump's political revenge," the statement reads.
The statement closed by saying, "If the Department of Justice may be used as a tool of political retribution, or to help the President with a political narrative for the next election, the rule of law will suffer new and irreparable damage."
John Durham, the U.S. attorney for the District of Connecticut, is leading the investigation as the White House digs into why the Russia probe was launched. Multiple FISA warrants were approved to allow surveillance of certain members of the Trump campaign in 2016, including adviser Carter Page.
A special counsel investigation did not find evidence that Trump or his campaign conspired with Russia to win the 2016 election. House Democrats are now conducting an impeachment inquiry, which Schiff is leading, into allegations that Trump used his office for political reasons.
