Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has hit back at suggestions that the upcoming film "Exodus: Gods and Kings" is "racist" because the main cast consists of Caucasian actors.
Murdoch took to Twitter to defend the decision by producer Ridley Scott to use white actors in the leading roles, including Christian Bale as Moses, Joel Edgerton as Rhamses, Aaron Paul as Joshua, Sigourney Weaver as Tuya and John Turturro as Seti.
Murdoch, head of the conglomerate which is producing and distributing the film, tweeted:
But his message caused an even greater backlash, resulting in Murdoch issuing two more tweets, with one of them urging his followers to "calm down," according to
CBS News.
That tweet was followed by:
Murdoch's messages came after comments Scott made in an interview with
Variety, in which he talked about casting American, European and Australian actors in the movie's major roles.
"I can't mount a film of this budget, where I have to rely on tax rebates in Spain, and say that my lead actor is Mohammad so-and-so from such-and-such," Scott said. "I'm just not going to get it financed. So the question doesn't even come up."
