Tuesday, 30 August 2011 09:40 AM EDT

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) — Algeria's Health Ministry says that ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's daughter has given birth to a baby girl in Algeria.

An official with the ministry says that Aisha Gadhafi gave birth in Algiers on Tuesday. The official provided no other information, including on where she gave birth. The official was not authorized to be publicly named according to ministry rules.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Gadhafi's wife Safia, his sons Hannibal and Mohammed, and his daughter Aisha entered southern Algeria from the Libyan border Monday.

Algerian news reports had said Aisha's pregnancy was one reason for Algeria's decision to take the family in.
