Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will announce his candidacy for the Utah Senate seat currently held by Orrin Hatch on Thursday, the Washington Examiner is reporting.
He will officially launch his campaign on social media, the website said. Romney intends to follow up the announcement a day later with a keynote address to Republicans near Salt Lake City, according to the Examiner.
Romney has teased about the announcement for several weeks without saying whether he would run or not.
The former Massachusetts governor moved to Utah following his loss in the presidential election. He has been considered the prime candidate for the Senate seat held by Hatch, who is not seeking another term.
The Examiner said Romney is not expected to face strong competition in the Senate race.
