Multiple Missouri agencies have launched an investigation into a care center for transgender youth following allegations from a whistleblower who claimed that patients were subjected to inappropriate physical exams and questioned about their sexual histories.

The investigation aims to determine the validity of these allegations, which were made by a former employee named Jamie Reed, and whether or not the center's practices comply with state and federal laws.

The Washington University Transgender Center at St. Louis Children's Hospital provides care for transgender and non-binary children and adolescents, including hormone therapy, mental health support, and other related services.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey announced in a press release that his office would investigate the allegations, along with the Missouri Department of Social Services and Division of Professional Registration.

"We take this evidence seriously and are thoroughly investigating to make sure children are not harmed by individuals who may be more concerned with a radical social agenda than the health of children," Bailey said in the release.

In light of the allegations, several Missouri lawmakers have expressed concern and called for increased transparency and accountability in the healthcare industry. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., said that his office is looking into the claims and sent a letter instructing both Washington University in St. Louis and St. Louis Children's Hospital to preserve records.

Washington University in St. Louis said in a statement: "We are alarmed by the allegations … describing practices and behaviors the author says she witnessed while employed at the university's Transgender Center. We are taking this matter very seriously and have already begun the process of looking into the situation to ascertain the facts. As always, our highest priority is the health and well-being of our patients. We are committed to providing compassionate, family-centered care to all of our patients and we hold our medical practitioners to the highest professional and ethical standards."
