Missouri Republicans could scarcely contain themselves Sunday, with the release of a fresh Missouri Scout poll showing Republican Josh Hawley leading Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill by 49 to 45 percent statewide.

The poll, which has a margin of error of +/-2.6 percent, stood in striking contrast to a Fox News poll two weeks ago showing State Attorney General Hawley and two-termer McCaskill tied at 46 percent each.

“Claire's at the end of her string,” former Lieutenant Governor and 2016 GOP gubernatorial hopeful Peter Kinder told Newsmax, “She's been tagged. No longer can she dodge and dance her famous two-step.”

Kinder reminded us how in 2012, “Missouri voters were ready to fire her six years ago “ until “she got her dream opponent.” He was referring to former Rep. Todd Aiken, whose controversial statements on abortion led to national Republicans abandoning his candidacy.  McCaskill was re-elected with 54.7 percent of the vote.

Most Show-Me State pundits attribute Hawley’s surge to growing enthusiasm among conservatives after the hard-fought battle to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.  McCaskill opposed the nomination while Hawley said without hesitation he would have voted for confirmation.
