Secretary of State Mike Pompeo took part in a rare meeting with a Palestinian official, as he met with Majid Faraj, the Palestinian Authority's head of security and intelligence services.
The meeting took place in April, shortly before Pompeo was sworn in as secretary, Haaretz reported.
A Palestinian official told Haaretz the meeting was held between "official security ranks," noting it happened before Pompeo had a political and diplomatic role in the U.S. State Department, the report said.
Despite the Palestinian boycott of the Trump administration, security talks between each side have continued, and they focus on regional issues, not only the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, the report said.
Faraj is considered to be one of the people closest to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The U.S. and Israel are looking at the Palestinian issue from a standpoint of national security, the report said.
Palestinian officials, including Faraj, see a value in continuing to coordinate with other parts of the U.S. government, the Haaretz report said.
Peace between the Israelis and Palestinians is a top priority, Pompeo said April 30.
