More than 750 million people would like to move to another country if they had the opportunity, comprising 15 percent of all adults internationally, according to a Gallup World Poll released on Monday that was conducted between 2015 and 2017.

This is an increase from 14 percent registered in the survey between 2013 and 2016 and the 13 percent between 2010 and 2012, but lower than the 16 percent between 2007 and 2009.

Other results from the poll include:

  • Although the image of American leadership decreased significantly between 2016 and 2017, the United States continues to be the most desired destination country for migrants, as it has since Gallup started conducting this survey a decade ago. Twenty-one percent of potential migrants, some 158 million adults, name the U.S. as their desired residence. Canada, Germany, France, Australia and the United Kingdom each appeal to more than 30 million adults.
  • However, 16 percent of Americans also said they would like to move to another country, which is the highest recorded to date.
  •  In 13 nations, at least half of the adult population would like to move to another country if they had the chance, with most of these nations going through some sort of upheaval.
  • The survey is based on interviews with 453, 122 people, aged 15 and older, in 152 countries from 2015 to 2017. There is 95 percent confidence that the margin of sampling error is less than one percentage point.
