Former national security adviser Michael Flynn owed his attorneys more than $4.6 million in unpaid legal fees before they parted ways last month, Politico reports.
Flynn was represented by Covington & Burling partners Robert Kelner and Stephen Anthony before they left his case last month, after billing him for about $5 million for the work they did starting in early 2017 representing him while his lobbying and consulting work was being investigated by the Justice Department.
Flynn’s contacts with the Russian ambassador during the transition to the Trump Administration also came under close scrutiny by former special counsel Robert Mueller’s team. He previously made a deal with prosecutors to plead guilty on a charge of lying to federal investigators in December, 2017, admitting that he gave inaccurate information when asked about several topics.
Politico obtained the invoices after they were introduced by defense lawyers while Kelner was testifying for Flynn’s former business partner, Bijan Rafiekian, also known as Bijan Kian,, at a criminal trial in Virginia federal court.
Although the invoices don’t detail exactly how much of the bill Flynn has paid, they do appear to show a bill for the investigation into Flynn Intel Group. The bill records were printed in April, and show the law firm having been credited with less than 2 percent of the total, or less than $25,000.
Kelner declined to comment to Politico.
