Michael Cohen, the disgraced and convicted former attorney of President Donald Trump, aspired to run for public office himself as the mayor of New York City or serving under his former client, The Washington Post reported.
"He kept bringing it up," Republican strategist Michael Caputo told the Post. "It went from Michael Cohen interested in running for mayor to, well, 'I'll run for lieutenant governor under Donald Trump.' I didn’t want to disabuse him of it, because he was our liaison.
"I felt like, 'Yeah, OK, Michael.'"
Cohen often used Trump as leverage, according to former Trump adviser Sam Nunberg.
"Cohen was always trying to use Trump to better himself – Cohen was about Cohen," Nunberg told the Post.
While Cohen has said he once maintained "blind loyalty" to Trump, Cohen's loyalty was actually to himself, according to a business associate.
"He didn't care about Trump," Evgeny Freidman told the Post. "Yes, he called him 'Mr. Trump.' But what he cared about was his business card that said, 'Personal attorney to Donald Trump.'"
