Ex-NYC Mayor Bloomberg Pledges $70M to Combat Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Billionaire Michael Bloomberg, a former mayor of New York City, is launching a project to help the U.S. achieve greenhouse gas emissions goals, CBS News reported.

The American Cities Climate Challenge will choose 20 U.S. cities and help them speed up their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in an effort to reach a 26-percent reduction by 2025 that had been set up during the Barack Obama administration, the CBS report said.

Bloomberg said on "CBS This Morning" Friday that he hoped President Donald Trump might change his mind about taking action against climate change.

"My great hope is that the president will take a look — he’s been getting bad advice — and he will change his mind. And we’ve watched him. He can change his mind. He changes it frequently. Hopefully he will come around and do something that makes some sense,” Bloomberg said on "CBS This Morning."

City governments and the private sector are the primary movers on action against climate change, Bloomberg said.

"Corporations are under big pressure from their employees, their customers, but mainly their investors, to do something, so they’re trying to be more climate friendly,” Bloomberg said in the interview.
