Miami Beach has told the Cuban government it is welcome to open a consulate in the seaside resort community after the city of Miami nixed the idea over security concerns.

Miami Herald reports that Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine and Commissioner Ricky Arriola held a closed-door meeting with Cuban officials on Wednesday to make the offer.
The offer comes following the resumption of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba, celebrated this week by President Barack Obama's historic visit to the tropical island 90 miles south of Key West.
Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado has dismissed the idea of a consulate in Miami which is the nation's richest city, as well as the largest with a Cuban-American plurality.
He told The Herald a consulate would affect the "peace and stability" of Miami because of protests when Cuba makes controversial decisions.
