Megyn Kelly is close to reaching a $30 million exit from NBC, the New York Post’s Page Six reported on Tuesday.
This comes after the anchor was dumped from “Today” last month after questioning why it was racist to wear blackface for Halloween.
In 2016, Kelly departed Fox News as the highest-rated female cable news host in 2016 and signed three-year, $69 million contract with NBC for, according to The Hill.
One TV source told the New York Post that “NBC decided rather than fight and face a lawsuit from her, they - and more importantly, Comcast with all its money - decided to draw a line under the entire debacle and pay Megyn the full amount owed in her contract to go away.”
The source added that this was unlikely to be the end of her career, because “in the Trump era, there are few broadcasters like her. Megyn would likely take a short break from TV and return to cable news ahead of the 2020 election.”
Following her controversial comments, Kelly apologized publicly and issued a statement to her colleagues, saying “I thought, why would it be controversial for someone dressing up as Diana Ross to make herself look like this amazing woman as a way of honoring and respecting her. I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I’m sorry. The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep.”
She added that “I’ve never been a “pc” kind of person - but I understand that we do need to be more sensitive in this day and age. Particularly on race and ethnicity issues which, far from being healed, have been exacerbated in our politics over the past year.”
