Meghan McCain warned Tuesday that Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., could be a sharp thorn in Republicans' side as he mounts another White House run.
Hours after Sanders kicked off his campaign, McCain said on "The View" that the Vermont socialist wields a lot of power with voters.
"The thing I will say about him is don't underestimate him – he got 60 percent of New Hampshire in 2016, 49 percent in Iowa," McCain said. "This time, there are no superdelegates to come against him at the convention like what happened before. The DNC, that we know of, isn't petitioning against him. There was a huge scandal with Debbie Wasserman Schultz and they seemed in the tank for Hillary Clinton.
"So, he already has that going for him."
McCain added she sees Sanders as a "truly formidable candidate." He will run as a Democrat, adding to a growing list of left-leaning politicians who have thrown their hats into the ring to challenge President Donald Trump.
"He's still the original, with all the socialist disciples coming up after him," McCain said. "So, I think he's a truly formidable candidate. I wouldn't underestimate him. He's the most popular politician in the country right now."
Sanders' campaign took in more than $1 million in three hours Tuesday. He finished second to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic primary.
