The winner of the Mega Millions $1.6 billion jackpot should get some good financial advice and remember to sign the ticket, game director Gordon Medenica told NBC's "Today."
The Mega Millions jackpot soared to a record-breaking $1.6 billion Friday. Powerball, also owned and operated by the Multi-State Lottery Association, reached $620 million with no winner Saturday. Both drawings take place Tuesday.
"Sign the ticket! Because keep in mind that little slip of paper is a billion-dollar bill — imagine that," Medenica told "Today."
"So you want to secure it and also be calm. Don't be running to the 'Today' show the next day."
"Get some good advice, get a good financial adviser, good lawyer, tax accountant, all that," he added. "Get your affairs in order. You've got between six months and 12 months to come and claim the ticket."
The previous largest lottery jackpot in history was set Jan. 13, 2016, when the Powerball jackpot hit $1.586 billion.
"Mega Millions has already entered historic territory, but it's truly astounding to think that now the jackpot has reached an all-time world record," Medenica said. "It's hard to overstate how exciting this is – but now it's really getting fun."
