Federal prosecutors want to know what President Donald Trump knew about a meeting between his son, Donald Trump Jr., and a Russian-linked lawyer that took place last year during the presidential campaign and whether he tried to cover up the reason it took place, sources told NBC News on Monday.

Trump Jr. sat down with Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya after she promised him damaging information about Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, news first reported by The New York Times and off which the president helped craft a letter in response.

The meeting was "a short introductory meeting," according to the letter, which was dictated by Trump but given to The New York Times as though Trump Jr. had written it.

"I asked Jared and Paul to stop by," the letter reportedly read. "We primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children that was active and popular with American families years ago and was since ended by the Russian government, but it was not a campaign issue at the time and there was no follow up."

According to The Times, he added: "I was asked to attend the meeting by an acquaintance, but was not told the name of the person I would be meeting with beforehand.

FBI special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating possible collusion between Trump's campaign team and Russian officials during the election, and federal investigators are working for him to uncover any connections.
