As talk in Washington mounts that Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross will soon resign, White House sources told Newsmax that Small Business Administrator Linda McMahon , formerly chief executive of World Wrestling Entertainment, is his likely successor in the Cabinet.
Talk of Ross resigning and McMahon, 70, moving up to the Commerce portfolio grew following reports that the SBA head is scheduled to meet with President Donlad Trump late Friday afternoon.
McMahon and husband Vince are personal friends of the president and were early backers of his during the 2016 campaign. In both 2010 and 2012, she was the unsuccessful Republican nominee for U.S. Senate from Connecticut.
McMahon reportedly wanted the post after Trump’s election, however, sources say the president-elect's close relationship with Ross led to his passing her over and instead naming her to run the SBA.
Ross, 80, has signaled for months he wanted to leave the Cabinet after the midterm elections.
