David McCormick to Enter Pennsylvania Senate Race

By    |   Friday, 15 September 2023 01:33 PM EDT

Businessman David McCormick appears ready to satisfy national GOP leaders and Pennsylvania's Republicans by entering next year's race for a U.S. Senate seat.

McCormick, who lost last year's Senate GOP primary to Mehmet Oz, has floated the possibility he again would seek the party's nomination to challenge three-term Democrat Sen. Bob Casey.

Politico reported earlier this week that Republicans seeking to recapture the Senate majority have tried to entice McCormick to run.

The outlet on Friday reported the businessman is expected to launch his campaign on Thursday, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Republicans believe the former hedge fund CEO's deep pockets and name recognition will help McCormick, who has drawn pledges of support from two major Senate GOP donor committees, the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC linked to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Although Casey likely will enter the race as the favorite, the GOP thinks McCormick can mount a more serious challenge to the incumbent than in previous elections.

Casey, 63, announced in April that he will seek a fourth term in office. He’s the longest-serving Democrat U.S. senator in Pennsylvania history, and has been a key ally of labor unions and President Joe Biden.

Oz lost the general election to John Fetterman, D-Pa.
