Congress will raise the nation's debt ceiling, as the United States will never be allowed to default on its debts, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, adding that reaching a deal between President Donald Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would be the best option to prevent chaos and the potential of shutdowns.

The deal, under discussions between Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, representing Trump in the talks, would hopefully be one that "we can all lock arms and support, because it will give us a chance to run the government in an orderly fashion for the next year and a half," McConnell told Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo.

McConnell said the spending agreement should not send defense in the wrong direction, because Trump has worked hard to improve it so its in "better shape than it's been in a decade."

"We will probably end up having to spend more on the domestic side than we would like to, but that is compromise," said McConnell. "That is what happens in a divided government when you don't control the whole government. The best option actually really is for the president and for the speaker to reach an agreement here that we can vote for, and end the uncertainty for the next year and a half."

Meanwhile, McConnell said spending is higher than he would like, but he also doesn't get to ignore the House.

"Of the options that we have available, standing up for national security ... that is what House and Senate Republicans and the administration are committed to doing," said McConnell. "We don't control the whole government, therefore we will have to allow more spending on the domestic side in order to get a bill through the House."
