Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., on Wednesday hit back at House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., for calling President Donald Trump's actions on Iran weak.

"A Cheney wants us to get into war? Weird," said Gaetz during an appearance on Fox News.

Cheney last week compared Trump to former President Barack Obama for not attacking Iran after the Middle East country shot down a $110 million drone.

"So, I'll wait to see additional information on it, but I think it's important that people recognize that the United States is going to keep its word and not go down the path that President Obama went down," Cheney told a CNN reporter Friday.

Cheney, whose father Dick Cheney was an early proponent of invading Iraq, later told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt the failure to respond to "this kind of direct provocation that we've seen now from the Iranians, in particular over the last several weeks, could in fact be a very serious mistake."

Gaetz appeared on Fox News with Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., after the pair unveiled a bill that would prohibit defense funds from being used to conduct a military operation against Iran.

"I look at a new coalition forming around the country that is not partisan in nature but an 'America first' idea," Gaetz said. "Ro is on the progressive wing of Democratic Party and I'm on the conservative side of the Republican Party. Recent reporting in The Hill showed that by a margin of 2-1 Americans favored diplomacy and negotiation over war."
