Washington Post editor Marty Baron on Wednesday said the media is "not at war" with President Donald Trump, The Atlantic reported.
A war takes two sides.
"We're not at war; we're at work," Baron told a gathering at the Washington Ideas Forum, sponsored by The Atlantic.
The rhetoric and Trump's attacks on the media are nothing new. Richard Nixon blasted the media at every turn but lacked the power of modern technology to trumpet his message the way the current president does.
But the mission for the media then was the same as it is now — report on the president. And, like every other president before and between, they're probably not going to like it, The Atlantic reported.
"We don't view ourselves as part of the resistance," Baron told the audience when asked about the Post's new motto, "Democracy Dies in Darkness," The Atlantic reported.
"That is our mission — to shine a light in dark corners and hold the government accountable," Baron said.
