Rep Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said President Donald Trump should stay strong and insist on billions of dollars in funding for the proposed wall at the U.S. southern border.
Meadows made his remarks during a Thursday morning interview on television’s “Fox & Friends.” Meadows said he believes Trump is getting “bad advice.”
Meadows said conservatives want Trump to veto the short-term spending bill because it lacks funding for the wall.
"They know that he's promised not once, not twice but three different times that he would get border wall funding, and here we are about to punt,” Meadows said.
"Here we are about to punt. And I would argue, it's not a punt. A punt actually helps improve the field advantage. This is a fumble, and we need to make sure that the president stays firm.
“If we’re not going to fight now, when are we going to fight?”
And he added: "A lot of people are very nervous this morning about whether the president will cave or not.”
But Meadows said Republicans hare in the blame for the lack of funding.
“We failed, we fumbled," he said.
Meanwhile, Trump has vowed not so sign any legislation pushed by Democratic lawmakers unless it includes “perfect border security.”
In a Thursday tweet, the president wrote: What they are just beginning to realize is that I will not sign any of their legislation, including infrastructure, unless it has perfect Border Security. U.S.A. WINS!”
