It's "just crazy" for Democrats to blame President Donald Trump for the growing humanitarian crisis at the nation's border because it's "clearly the inaction of Congress" that brought on the situation, Rep. Mark Green said Monday.
"[Congress] had many opportunities to fix the immigration issue," the Tennessee Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom," pointing out that various loopholes have been going on well before Trump took office have yet to be fixed.
"We can't get the Democrats to do anything," said Green. "They are actually interested in 2020 talking points more than they are the safety of the American people. The president talked about it being a humanitarian crisis before and cited the Doctors Without Borders study that showed 31% of the women are getting sexually assaulted as they make this trek. They're more concerned about 2020 and talking points than the safety of the American people."
Green also said that it's clear Trump's threat to close the border created action on the part of the Mexican government.
"Clearly the threat to close the border created action on the Mexican government's part," said Green. "They are blocking their southern border now, enforcing their own immigration law. Their immigration laws are better than ours."
Meanwhile, Green said he thinks the weekend resignation of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen showed she was in an "unfortunate" situation.
"She was caught between a president and Democratic leadership," said Green. "I'm excited by [Kevin] McAleenan. He seems like the right guy. He was actually appointed as deputy commissioner by President [Barack] Obama so hopefully he can get in there and reason with the majority party."
