Parents of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students have created a political action committee to go after politicians funded by the National Rifle Association, the SunSentinel is reporting.
The group, Families vs Assault Rifles PAC Inc., began taking donations on Wednesday. It will use the money to try to oust candidates who oppose efforts to amend laws on semi-automatic rifles or receive donations from the NRA, the newspaper reported.
Seventeen people were shot and killed at the Parkland, Florida high school in February.
The PAC was registered as a nonprofit by Jeff Kasky, father of Douglas high school student activist Cameron Kasky.
"We are going to go up against NRA candidates in every meaningful race in the country," Kasky told the newspaper.
He said donations already were coming in from Douglas "parents of murdered children and parents like myself, who were lucky to get our kids back that day."
The group’s website said its "mission is two-fold and clear: To remove the NRA from our political system and then to amend the National Firearms Act of 1934 to include a ban on assault weapons, bump stocks and high-capacity magazines."
And it added: "Please help us stop continuing to allow the NRA to be elected to office. Let’s correct this problem for our children’s future."
