Just over half of Americans think the smell of marijuana in public has become a problem, and nearly a quarter say they really “hate” the whiff of weed when they walk outside, an online survey found.
The survey conducted by PSB Research, Civilized, Burson Cohn & Wolfe, and BuzzFeed News, found attitudes even more harsh in Canada, which legalized cannabis last fall.
Here’s the breakdown:
- 23% of Americans called the smell of weed while walking down a sidewalk a major problem; 28% called it a minor problem; 28% also called it “not really a problem” and 21% said it was “not a problem at all.”
- Among cannabis users in the United Sates, one-third said the smell is a problem; 10% called it a major problem. In contrast, 27% of nonconsumers called the smell a major problem and another 29% called it a minor problem.
- 23% of Americans affirmed “I hate when I smell cannabis in public,” and another 18% said they don’t enjoy it; 18% said they do like the smell in public; 41% said they don’t notice or don’t care.
- In Canada, 57% said they dislike or hate the smell in public and a full 60% called it a major, or a minor problem.
- 84% percent of Americans reported favoring legalization for medical or recreational purposes; 60% support making it legal for tax and sales, like alcohol.
