A newborn baby boy, just hours old with his umbilical cord still attached, was left inside a Nativity scene in a New York City church on Monday.
The child was wrapped in towels and left in the manger scene at Holy Child Jesus Church in Queens around noon on Monday,
according to CBS New York.
Police estimated the child was about 4 to 5 hours old when a custodian heard him crying and found him.
The church is considered a "safe haven" under New York law, meaning it is a place where anyone can leave a child with a responsible person if it is younger than 30 days old. The woman could still face prosecution, however, since she did not leave the child with anyone.
"The baby was brand new. He still had the umbilical cord attached. It's a beautiful baby boy," the Rev. Christopher Heanue
told the New York Post.
Many of the church's members already have asked about adopting the child, he said.
The baby was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he was found to be in good health.
