Sen. Luther Strange, R-Ala., issued congratulations Wednesday to Doug Jones, the Democrat who won the Senate election in Alabama Tuesday night.
Jones will take Strange's position in the U.S. Senate after defeating Roy Moore in the special election Tuesday night.
"The people of Alabama made their voices heard last night. I respect their decision, and I congratulate Doug Jones on a well-earned victory,” Strange said in a statement, according to The Hill.
"Serving the people of Alabama as a twice-elected attorney general and now as a senator has been the honor of a lifetime. I am grateful to my friends, Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby for their strong leadership,” Strange said in his statement, referring to Shelby, the other Alabama senator.
"I am proud to have worked with the president to put rule-of-law judges on our courts, roll back harmful regulations, and design a plan to give tax relief to Alabama's working families,” Strange wrote in his statement, The Hill reported.
Jones' Republican opponent, Moore, defeated Strange in a runoff for the Senate seat, which was vacated when then-Sen. Jeff Sessions was appointed attorney general.
On Dec. 7, Strange delivered a speech on his exit from the Senate. He posted segments of the speech in tweets.
